China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), originating from the Fifth Academy of the Ministry of National Defense established on October 8, 1956 and experiencing the historic evolution of the Seventh Ministry of Machinery Industry, the Ministry of Space Industry, the Ministry of Aerospace Industry and China Aerospace Corporation, was formally founded on July 1, 1999 with the approval of the State Council.
CASC is a large state-owned enterprise group with its own famous brands such as Shenzhou and Long March, intellectual properties, outstanding main business and strong core competitiveness. As an institutional investor authorized by the State, CASC has eight large R&D and production entities, i.e. China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, China Academy of Space Technology, Academy of Aerospace Solid Propulsion Technology, Academy of Aerospace Liquid Propulsion Technology, Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, Sichuan Academy of Aerospace Technology, China Academy of Aerospace Electronics Technology, and China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics as well as China Great Wall Industry Corporation, China Aerospace Engineering Consultation Center and many other institutions and companies directly subordinated to it. CASC is mainly engaged in research, design, manufacture and launch of space systems such as launch vehicles, satellites and manned spaceships as well as strategic and tactical missiles, and also provides international commercial satellite launch service. It has the ability and experiences to perform large system engineering management. Over the past decades, CASC has made outstanding contributions to the national economic and social development, national defense modernization and scientific and technical progress. Represented by its listed holding companies, CASC has a number of high- and new-tech enterprises dealing with research, development and production of the civilian products including satellite applications, IT technology, new materials and advanced energy, special space technology applications, automobile parts and special vehicles, which are forming industrial scale progressively with a vigorous development trend.
CASC has 100 thousand employees in total, including a technical team of excellent scientists and technicians, a management team of outstanding enterprisers, a production team of highly-skilled workers, about 30 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering,30 national-level members of the state’s “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project for the New Century”, 5 winners of Chinese Craftsmanship Prize, and more than 60 national highly-skilled technicians. CASC has also fostered the space spirit, the “atomic bomb, missile and satellite” spirit and the manned space flight spirit as well as its unique corporate culture with distinct features of the times and space characteristics, which takes “to give priority to national interests, to be human-oriented, to win credit with quality, to get stronger through innovation” as its core value outlook.
Through optimizing resource configuration and adjusting ability structure, CASC is now making efforts to realize a combined and coordinated development of military and civilian production with system design as the backbone and with subsystem technologies as the basis, sustaining military production with civilian activities. In accordance with the highest standards and under the development strategy of specialization, industrialization, integrated operation and internationalization with respect to its technology, products, management and operation, CASC is accelerating the development of core technologies and innovative products, promoting international cooperation and ensuring its sustainable and leaping growth by adapting itself to international market rules.
Taking “creating human civilization in space and erecting national monument to science and technology” as its mission, in line with the development guideline of “building CASC into a consolidated leading aerospace company through reform and innovation”, CASC is laying stress on its three main businesses of missile weapon systems, aerospace technologies and products and civilian products, devoting itself to innovation and pioneering, accelerating its development, and forging ahead toward the goal of becoming an internationally leading aerospace company.
